LASEK laser eye surgery is an outstanding alternative to LASIK, particularly for people with thinner corneas who may not be suitable candidates for LASIK.

This procedure offers a safe and effective solution for achieving clear vision when LASIK is not recommended. By reshaping the cornea without creating a flap, LASEK provides an option that minimises the risk of complications and preserves more corneal tissue. It is a safe and reliable method for those seeking improved vision and freedom from glasses or contact lenses when LASIK isn't an option.

How does LASEK laser surgery work?

LASEK eye surgery offers a precise solution by reshaping the cornea so that light focuses directly on the retina.

This surface laser eye surgery involves applying a wavefront aberration-free treatment directly to the eye's surface without creating a flap in the cornea, as done in LASIK.

Often referred to as advanced surface ablation, LASEK avoids creating a corneal flap. Instead, the surgeon makes a tiny incision with a laser and peels back the surface tissue (the epithelium), which remains intact throughout the procedure.

Your vision depends on light entering through the cornea (the front part of the eye) and focusing on the retina.

This information is then transmitted to the brain via the optic nerve. If you require glasses or contact lenses to see clearly, it's often because your eyeballs are either too long or too short relative to the cornea. Longer eyeballs cause short-sightedness (myopia), while shorter eyeballs cause long-sightedness (hyperopia).

For those considering other options, TransPRK is another advanced surface ablation technique which we offer that removes the epithelium entirely with the laser before reshaping the cornea. This method can offer an even quicker recovery time and is completely touch-free.

By utilising these methods, LASEK and TransPRK provide effective alternatives for people with thinner corneas or those unsuitable for LASIK, ensuring precise vision correction and improved visual outcomes.

  • Suitable for thin corneas: LASEK (Laser-Assisted Sub-Epithelial Keratectomy) is particularly beneficial for individuals with thinner corneas who may not be suitable candidates for LASIK. The procedure preserves more corneal tissue, making it a safer option for these patients.
  • Lower risk of dry eyes: LASEK surgery is less likely to result in dry eyes as the procedure preserves more of the corneal nerves responsible for tear production.
  • Long-term stability: LASEK offers excellent long-term results. Once the initial healing process is complete, patients enjoy stable, clear vision for many years.

LASEK FAQ's

View knowledge base

What is the difference between LASIK and LASEK?

The main difference between LASEK and LASIK is how the cornea is treated. In LASIK, a flap is created in the cornea before the laser reshapes the underlying tissue. In LASEK, no flap is created. Instead, the outer layer of the cornea (epithelium) is gently removed, and the laser is applied directly to the surface. This makes LASEK a better option if you have thinner corneas.

What is the recovery time for LASEK surgery?

Recovery from LASEK surgery typically takes longer than LASIK. Most people can expect to return to normal activities within a week, although full visual recovery may take several weeks. During the first week, you will experience some discomfort and blurry vision as the epithelium heals, and vision settles. We will give you drops to keep you comfortable during this time.

Am I a candidate for LASEK eye surgery?

LASEK is ideal for individuals with thin or irregular corneas who may not be suitable candidates for LASIK. It can effectively correct myopia, hyperopia astigmatism, reading vision problems or a combination of these. During your comprehensive initial consultation your expert surgeon will determine if LASEK is the best option for your specific vision needs.
