What is Trabeculectomy?

Trabeculectomy is a type of glaucoma surgery offered by OCL Vision.

This advanced filtration operation creates a new outflow channel for aqueous fluid to drain out of the eye, effectively reducing intraocular pressure (IOP).

This procedure aims to prevent further vision loss in individuals who suffer from glaucoma. Explore our content to learn about the procedure, suitability, recovery process, and cost.

How does Trabeculectomy work?

Trabeculectomy involves creating a new drainage channel to help reduce eye pressure.

This channel, known as the bleb, is in the upper part of the eye and is usually covered by the eyelid.

  • Before and during Trabeculectomy: Before the surgery, your consultant may prescribe anti-inflammatory drops to prepare the eye surface and improve the operation's success. The surgery, which lasts between 45 minutes and an hour, involves anaesthetising the eye and creating a passageway for fluid to flow through, secured with sutures. Antibiotics and anti-inflammatory injections are administered post-surgery, and your eye is protected with a cotton pad and shield.
  • After Trabeculectomy: Post-surgery, patients should avoid eye rubbing, heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, bending down, water exposure, and straining. Intensive topical steroids and antibiotics will be prescribed for 4-6 weeks. Initial vision may be blurred, and the eye might feel uncomfortable, but these symptoms subside within the first week. Regular follow-up visits will ensure proper healing and pressure management.

Trabeculectomy FAQ's

View knowledge base

Am I a suitable candidate for trabeculectomy?

Ideal candidates for trabeculectomy are those with glaucoma who have not responded well to medications or other treatments. A comprehensive eye examination by our glaucoma specialist will determine if trabeculectomy is the best option for your specific condition.

How long does the trabeculectomy procedure take, and what is the recovery time?

The trabeculectomy procedure typically takes about 45 minutes to an hour per eye. Recovery involves avoiding certain activities and using prescribed drops. Vision usually stabilises within 3-4 weeks, with regular follow-ups to ensure proper healing. Post-surgery, eye pressure stabilises without the need for glaucoma drops, controlling the disease and preventing further progression.

Can glaucoma be cured after trabeculectomy?

Trabeculectomy helps control glaucoma by reducing eye pressure but does not reverse existing damage. It aims to halt disease progression.

How long does trabeculectomy last?

Trabeculectomy typically lasts 15-20 years, with its longevity influenced by the patient's age, anti-scarring agents used, post-op healing, and subsequent surgeries.

Can I drive after a trabeculectomy?

Driving depends on the vision and visual field defect in both eyes. If the unoperated eye has good vision and minimal defect, driving is legally allowed. However, you may want to avoid driving for a few days post-surgery until your vision stabilises.
