Ptosis Surgery: Correcting Droopy Eyelids for Improved Vision and Aesthetics

Book a Consultation

Ptosis, or droopy eyelids, is a condition where the upper eyelid droops, potentially blocking vision and causing discomfort.

This condition can affect one (unilateral ptosis) or both eyelids (bilateral ptosis). While non-surgical options such as ptosis props, Botulinum Toxin injections, and scleral contact lenses can offer temporary relief, surgery often provides the most effective and lasting solution.

What Is Ptosis surgery?

Ptosis surgery aims to elevate the drooping eyelid to restore normal vision, alleviate headaches, correct abnormal head posture, and improve self-esteem.

By enhancing eyelid symmetry, the procedure not only addresses functional issues but also has a significant positive impact on appearance.

Ptosis surgery options

At our clinics in London and Elstree, Hertfordshire, we offer three primary approaches for ptosis surgery.

Anterior approach

Description
An incision is made in the upper eyelid’s skin crease to access and tighten the levator muscle. This approach results in a discreet scar and allows for simultaneous blepharoplasty to remove excess skin.

Benefits
Effective for comprehensive eyelid correction with minimal visible scarring.

Posterior approach

Description
The incision is made on the inside of the upper eyelid, eliminating visible scarring and providing a natural eyelid contour.

Benefits
Ideal for a clean aesthetic with no visible marks.

Brow suspension

Description
Used when the levator muscle is too weak or damaged, involving the use of a tissue strip from the thigh or synthetic materials to lift the eyelid by attaching it to the brow area.

Benefits
Suitable for more severe cases where muscle repair is not feasible.

Ptosis surgery is typically performed under local anaesthesia, with or without sedation, depending on your specific needs and preferences.

What should I expect during the recovery period?

  • Swelling and Bruising: Normal after surgery, with most settling within 2-4 weeks. Full recovery may take up to 3 months in some cases.
  • Ice Packs: Apply ice packs, such as frozen peas in a cloth, up to 6 times a day for the first 10 days to reduce swelling.
  • Sleeping Position: Sleep semi-upright with pillows for the first 7 days to help minimise swelling. Eye shields will be provided for nighttime protection.
  • Activity Restrictions: Avoid strenuous exercise for at least 2 weeks and swimming for 6 weeks. Makeup can be worn again after 3-4 weeks.
  • Itching: Avoid rubbing the eyes as it can disrupt the healing process and potentially cause recurrence.

When can I return to work?

  • Initial Rest: Rest is recommended for the first few days. Working from home on a computer is generally feasible after 2 days, but ensure your eyes are well-lubricated with prescribed drops.
  • Full Return: Most people can return to work within 7-10 days, depending on their recovery progress.

What are the surgery results?

Approximately 80-85% of patients achieve satisfactory results with a single surgery. In rare cases, ptosis may recur, or the opposite eyelid may appear droopy post-surgery. This often resolves on its own, but additional surgery may be necessary in some instances.
