Pterygium, often called "surfer's eye," is a benign growth of conjunctival tissue that extends onto the cornea. This condition is primarily caused by prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, wind, and dust.
Book a ConsultationPterygium, commonly known as "surfer's eye," is a growth of benign tissue on the conjunctiva that can extend onto the cornea.
Although often harmless, it can cause discomfort, irritation, and vision problems if it grows large enough.
Surgical removal is recommended if the pterygium affects your vision or causes significant discomfort. At OCL Vision, we offer advanced pterygium surgery to ensure optimal outcomes and minimal recurrence.
What is Pterygium Surgery?
Pterygium surgery involves the removal of the abnormal tissue growth from the eye.
This procedure is typically performed under local or general anaesthetic, depending on the size and location of the pterygium and individual preference.
The surgeon uses precision micro-instruments to excise the pterygium and then performs an autograft. This graft uses tissue from an area of the eye that is not affected, usually harvested from beneath the eyelid, to cover the area where the pterygium was removed. The graft is secured with dissolvable stitches or glue.
- Improved Vision: The surgery removes the growth that may be obstructing vision or causing visual disturbances, leading to clearer and more stable eyesight.
- Reduced Discomfort: Post-surgery, individuals experience relief from irritation and discomfort that was caused by the pterygium.
- Minimised Risk of Reoccurrence: The use of conjunctival autografting significantly reduces the likelihood of the pterygium returning. Our advanced glue technique further decreases this risk to less than 1%.
