How does iStent surgery work?

iStent surgery involves the implantation of a microscopic device into the eye.

iStent surgery involves the implantation of a microscopic, FDA-approved device into the eye during cataract surgery or as a standalone procedure.

It is the smallest implant in the human body. This device creates a permanent opening in the trabecular meshwork, the eye's natural drainage system, facilitating the outflow of aqueous humour and reducing intraocular pressure. By doing so, it helps to control the progression of glaucoma.

iStent FAQ's

View knowledge base

Am I a suitable candidate for iStent surgery?

Ideal candidates for iStent surgery are those with open-angle glaucoma who seek a less invasive surgical option to manage intraocular pressure. A comprehensive eye examination by our glaucoma specialist will determine if iStent surgery is the best option for your specific condition.

How long does the iStent procedure take, and what is the recovery time?

The iStent procedure typically takes about 30 minutes. Recovery time is minimal, with most patients experiencing little to no discomfort and returning to normal activities within a day or two.

Can glaucoma be cured after iStent surgery?

iStent surgery helps control glaucoma by improving the outflow of aqueous humour, effectively lowering eye pressure and halting disease progression. It does not reverse existing damage but aims to preserve current vision levels.

Can I drive after iStent surgery?

Most patients can drive the day after iStent surgery, but it depends on the vision in both eyes. It is advisable to refrain from driving immediately after the procedure due to temporary blurred vision.

How long does it take for iStent surgery to heal?

Healing typically takes a few days, with vision stabilising and normal activities resuming within 24 hours. Follow-up appointments ensure proper healing and pressure management.

Are scans included in the glaucoma consultation price?

Scans are not included in the initial consultation fee. The initial consultation is £260, and scans cost £300 in total (either 1 or 2 scans, as confirmed by the consultant). This brings the total price to £560.
