Your cornea plays a vital role in maintaining clear vision.

At OCL Vision we offer a comprehensive range of advanced treatments for corneal conditions, utilising the latest technology and surgical techniques to restore and protect your vision.

What are corneal conditions?

Corneal conditions refer to a variety of disorders that affect the cornea, the clear, dome-shaped surface at the front of the eye that plays a crucial role in focusing vision.

These conditions can range from infections, injuries, and degenerative diseases like keratoconus, to dystrophies such as Fuchs' dystrophy.

Corneal conditions may lead to symptoms like blurred vision, pain, redness, and sensitivity to light. Left untreated, they can significantly impair vision and even lead to blindness. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential to manage these conditions effectively and preserve eye health.

TREATMENT OPTIONS

What are the treatment options for corneal conditions at OCL Vision?

Corneal Cross-Linking

Corneal Cross-Linking (CXL) is an innovative procedure used to strengthen and stabilise the cornea, particularly in those with keratoconus, a condition where the cornea thins and bulges into a cone shape. This minimally invasive treatment involves applying riboflavin (vitamin B2) drops to the cornea and then activating them with ultraviolet (UV) light. CXL helps to halt the progression of keratoconus, preserving vision and preventing further deterioration.

Keratoplasty (Corneal Transplant)

Keratoplasty, commonly known as corneal transplant surgery, is a procedure where a damaged or diseased cornea is replaced with healthy donor tissue. There are different types of keratoplasty, including:

  • Penetrating Keratoplasty (PK): A full-thickness transplant where the entire cornea is replaced.
  • Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty (DALK): Replaces the front layers of the cornea while preserving the healthy inner layers.

Keratoplasty is recommended for patients with severe corneal damage due to injury, infection, or advanced keratoconus.

KeraNatural CAIRS

KeraNatural Corneal Allogenic Intrastromal Ring Segments (CAIRS) is a modern treatment designed to reshape the cornea and improve vision in patients with keratoconus or other corneal irregularities. This procedure involves inserting natural corneal tissue rings into the cornea, which helps flatten and regularise its shape, significantly enhancing vision. KeraNatural CAIRS is a promising alternative if you are not suitable for corneal transplants.

EndoArt® (Endothelial Cell Therapy)

EndoArt® is an innovative treatment for those with endothelial dysfunction, such as Fuchs’ dystrophy, where the innermost layer of the cornea becomes damaged, leading to swelling and vision loss. This procedure involves implanting a thin, artificial endothelial layer into the cornea, which mimics the function of natural endothelial cells, improving clarity and reducing corneal edema. EndoArt® offers a less invasive alternative to traditional corneal transplant surgeries.

Pterygium Surgery

Pterygium is a benign growth of tissue on the white of the eye that can extend onto the cornea, causing discomfort, redness, and vision problems. Pterygium surgery involves removing the growth and, in some cases, grafting tissue to prevent recurrence. This outpatient procedure restores the eye's appearance and prevents further complications.

Iris Implant Surgery

Iris Implant Surgery is a specialised procedure designed for patients with congenital or traumatic iris defects, which can cause light sensitivity and cosmetic concerns. The surgery involves implanting a custom-made artificial iris to restore the eye's natural appearance and function. Iris implants can also improve vision by reducing glare and enhancing contrast.

Descemet’s Stripping Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSEK)

DSEK is a partial-thickness corneal transplant procedure that replaces only the damaged endothelial layer of the cornea. This technique is less invasive than full-thickness transplants and offers quicker recovery times and better visual outcomes. DSEK is particularly effective for if you have a condition like Fuchs’ dystrophy and other endothelial disorders.

Corneal Transplant

Corneal Transplant, or keratoplasty, is performed when the cornea is severely damaged or diseased, and other treatments are not sufficient. It involves replacing the damaged cornea with a healthy donor cornea, restoring vision and providing relief from pain and discomfort. Depending on your condition, the transplant may be full-thickness (Penetrating Keratoplasty) or partial-thickness (DSEK or DALK).

Corneal surgery FAQ's

View knowledge base

What conditions might require corneal treatment or surgery?

Corneal treatments and surgeries are typically recommended for conditions like keratoconus, corneal scarring, infections, Fuchs’ dystrophy, and severe dry eye. These treatments can help restore clarity, reduce pain, and improve vision.

How long is the recovery period after corneal surgery?

Recovery time varies depending on the type of surgery performed. While some procedures like Corneal Cross-Linking may require a few days to a week for initial recovery, more extensive surgeries like a corneal transplant can take several months to fully heal. Your surgeon will provide detailed post-operative care instructions to support your recovery.

Will I need to wear glasses or contact lenses after corneal surgery?

In many cases, corneal surgery can significantly improve your vision, but you may still need glasses or contact lenses for optimal vision correction. The need for corrective lenses depends on the specific condition treated and the type of surgery performed. Your eye doctor will assess your vision post-surgery and recommend the best options for you.
