Will my insurance cover the cost of cataract surgery?

Insurance typically covers the cost of cataract surgery with a standard monofocal lens, but premium lenses require an excess to be paid.

At OCL Vision, We provide fee assured private insurance services at our Central London and Elstree clinics and surgery facilities for cataract surgery.

We are part of the AXA PPP and BUPA cataract networks; if you’re insured with these companies, we will bill your insurer a pre-agreed package price which includes your cataract consultation, diagnostic tests, surgery and aftercare.

How much will premium lenses cost on top of my insurance?

For cataract surgery, insurance companies only cover the cost of standard lenses. We often recommend premium lenses for our cataract patients as this maximises the quality of vision and can result in more natural vision for example with a greater depth of focus.

In addition, for those who are seeking independence of glasses and contact lenses, premium lens use is normally required. The fees listed below are the ‘uplift’ fee which represents the difference between what your insurer will pay for a standard lens and what we charge for the premium lenses.

This includes not only the cost of the lens but also the increased time and diagnostics required to evaluate and deliver the results that you expect.

What does the quoted cataract cost cover?

You may be quoted a cost for your cataract surgery that you later find doesn’t cover ‘extras’ such as after-care. It’s important to understand what your cataract surgery quote includes before you agree to proceed with the procedure.

At OCL Vision, our transparent pricing includes surgery and all after-care costs.

Am I suitable for standard cataract surgery?

There are a few factors that could mean you’re unsuitable for traditional or Femtosecond laser supported cataract surgery. This includes if you have keratoconus, if you have an irregularly shaped cornea, or if you’ve had radial keratotomy surgery before.

If this is the case, you can have the advanced IC-8™ intraocular lens implanted in your eye. Our surgeons are some of the few specialists in the UK that offer this safe and effective new treatment option for patients that previously wouldn’t have been able to have a cataract surgery. Cataract surgery with an IC-8™ lens costs £4,795 per eye.

Do I need Femtosecond laser cataract surgery?

Femtosecond Laser Cataract Surgery is the latest advance in cataract surgery that is available at only a few centres in the UK including OCL Vision. The incision required to remove the cataract and implant the lens is performed using a precise laser instead of a blade. As this is more precise than traditional cataract surgery, the use of this technology to carry out the surgery costs an additional £500 per eye at OCL Vision.

Do I require lenses that allow for multiple focal ranges?

While standard monofocal lens implants work very well to correct vision, they only have a single focus. This means the lens can correct either distance or near vision, but not both. This means glasses still need to be worn in some situations like for reading and computer work.

These different focal ranges can be corrected by premium lenses. Enhanced premium monofocal lenses correct distance vision while also enhancing intermediate distance vision, while trifocal lenses correct near, intermediate, and distance vision. See the differences between the lenses below, and click here to jump to our pricing for the different lenses.

Are there finance options to pay for cataract surgery?

At OCL Vision, we offer 0% interest finance options making it easier to spread the cost of surgery over up to 24 months.

A minimum 10% deposit is required and the balance is split over your chosen monthly period of either 6, 11, or 24 months at a rate of 0% APR. Read more about our finance options here.
