Mr Chien Wong is a consultant ophthalmologist and vitreoretinal surgeon at two leading NHS hospitals: Moorfields Eye Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children.

He excels in adult vitreoretinal surgery, managing conditions from eye floaters to diabetic retinal disease, with a super-specialist focus on paediatric retinal detachments and vitreoretinal diseases. Mr. Wong's approach as a vitreoretinal surgeon combines personalised care with the latest clinical evidence and innovative surgical techniques. He further honed his expertise with 2.5 years of paediatric surgical retina and retinovascular fellowships at Beaumont Hospital, Michigan, and Children's Hospital Los Angeles, funded by prestigious awards.

Mr. Wong is a key opinion leader in vitreoretinal surgery, sought after by international companies for his insights on improving surgical technologies. He collaborates with NGOs to train vitreoretinal surgical teams and advises on safety and effectiveness. He has led or co-instructed over twenty surgical courses globally, including directing complex vitreoretinal surgery courses at the American Academy of Ophthalmology's annual conference.

Ranked in the top 0.2% globally of published authors on vitreoretinal surgery, Mr. Wong is recognised as the No.1 expert in the UK and No.5 worldwide. He has authored over forty collaborative scientific publications and six book chapters, and delivered over 130 conference presentations, including a Keynote lecture in 2017. He is a co-investigator on several gene therapy clinical trials and the UK Chief Investigator for the RAINBOW trial.

A GLOBAL REPUTATION

Over twenty awards

Mr. Wong has received over twenty awards throughout his career and was elected to the Retina Society in the USA in 2018. In 2014, he introduced a novel endoscopic vitrectomy approach in the UK, significantly improving outcomes for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) retinal detachments.

In 2019, he performed the first-in-man gene therapy vitrectomy surgery for LCA-4, a rare genetic retinal condition, at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children.

Since 2014, Mr. Wong has worked closely with the Armenian EyeCare Project, a California-based NGO. Supported by the Armenian Health Ministry and a significant grant from USAID, he helped develop a national paediatric vitreoretinal treatment centre in Armenia. He provided quarterly on-site surgical training, transitioning to telesurgery in 2016, enabling the Armenian team to perform high-risk ROP surgeries with remote supervision from Great Ormond Street Hospital.
