Mr Mark Wilkins is a consultant ophthalmic surgeon specialising in laser eye surgery, lens-based vision correction surgery, cataract and corneal transplant surgery including the super-specialised Boston keratoprosthesis (KPRO) procedure. He is also a Director of OCL Vision.

He is the former head of the corneal service at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS trust and an honorary lecturer at University College London, having been a consultant since 2006.

Mr Wilkins completed his training at University College Hospital (UCH), London. He then went on to complete two years of super-specialised and competitive cornea, cataract and refractive surgery fellowships at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS trust, before being appointed as a consultant in 2006 at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS trust.

Amongst other roles, research has continued to be a significant part of Mr Wilkins’ career and so he has been the principal investigator for a large National Institute for Health research trial. He is also an honorary senior lecturer at the Institute of Ophthalmology.

Research highlights

Over 90 publications in laser refractive surgery

Mr Wilkins has an active interest in research, having completed a research fellowship at the Institute of Ophthalmology, UCL with over 90 publications in laser refractive surgery as well as cornea and cataract surgery to date.

He has set up multiple randomised controlled trials in cataract and glaucoma surgery, including being the chief investigator for the FACT trial, looking at femtosecond laser use in cataract surgery. A pioneer in the field, he set up the Keratoprosthesis service at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS trust, using artificial corneas to treat corneal blindness. He is now pushing boundaries and challenging dogma in corneal transplant surgery by practicing novel suture-less, posture-less, endothelial corneal transplant surgery.

An active member of several societies, he often presents at national and international conferences, including European and American Societies of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (UKISCRS, ESCRS, ASCRS), American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO). He also holds the Certificate in Laser Refractive Surgery from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (Cert LRS).
