Customised Flap Creation in Laser Eye Surgery

Over the last few years Allon Barsam has been researching ways in which the LASIK flap can be created in the most conservative and customised way. This ensures maximum safety, speed of recovery and most importantly reduces the risk of dry eye after laser vision correction considerably. Some of the work that he has done on this is described in the articles below:

Essentially the less corneal tissue is affected by the creation of the flap, both in terms of the thickness of the flap and the diameter of the flap the less the chances of developing dry eye post-operatively. Allon Barsam therefore routinely customises the flap size to the intended size of the excimer laser ablation in order to maximise the recovery for his patients. He combines the fantastic Z-LASIK technology  (the most gentle small spot laser energy of all femtosecond  lasers currently available) with these principals of customisation. He was therefore the first surgeon in Britain to carry out Z-LASIK with FTSF (thin flap small flap). Needless to say that this patient as well as hundreds of others that he has subsequently treated with that technology have not suffered problems with dry eyes.
