Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery

Minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) refers to a range of innovative surgical techniques designed to lower intraocular pressure (IOP) in glaucoma patients with less risk and shorter recovery times compared to traditional glaucoma surgeries.

MIGS procedures involve smaller incisions and often utilise specialised micro-devices or implants to improve the eye's natural fluid drainage pathways or create new outflow channels. Common MIGS options include the iStent, which implants a tiny stent to enhance fluid drainage, and the XEN Gel Stent, which provides a controlled outflow of aqueous humor. MIGS is typically performed in conjunction with cataract surgery or as a standalone procedure, offering a safer, effective alternative for managing glaucoma while preserving the patient’s quality of life and minimizing postoperative discomfort.
