Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases characterised by increased intraocular pressure (IOP) that can lead to progressive damage to the optic nerve, potentially resulting in vision loss or blindness if left untreated.

Often referred to as the "silent thief of sight," glaucoma typically develops slowly and may not present noticeable symptoms until significant vision impairment occurs. The most common form, primary open-angle glaucoma, progresses gradually and is usually detected during routine eye exams. Other types include angle-closure glaucoma, which can present with sudden symptoms such as severe eye pain and blurred vision. Early diagnosis and treatment, which may involve medications, laser therapy, or surgical procedures, are essential for managing glaucoma and preserving vision. Regular eye check-ups are crucial for early detection, especially for individuals at higher risk due to family history or other factors.
