Presbymax is a sophisticated laser eye surgery procedure that is available only on the Schwind Amaris 1050RS laser platform. Presbymax treats presbyopia (also known as ‘reading vision problems’). In addition to this, the following conditions can also be corrected at the same time: myopia (short-sightedness), hyperopia (long-sightedness), and astigmatism (irregular eye shape).

What is Presbymax?

Presbymax precisely adjusts the optics of the eye to extend the depth of focus in the non-dominant eye. This extended range of focus creates a smoother transition between distance and near vision for a complete range of focus. The treatment itself is minimally invasive as it doesn’t involve touching or replacing the lens of the eye. In addition, the procedure is quick; it only takes a few minutes. There have been more than 26000 individuals with presbyopia who have received Presbymax treatment.

Presbymax works by altering the way that the cornea on the front surface of the eye handles light. Rather than just allowing the cornea to channel light from one point of focus the laser produces a unique corneal shape adjustment which allows light to be directed accurately from more than one point of focus.

OCL Vision have refined the Presbymax treatment process to ensure the most natural visual results and have been working closely with Schwind as an internationally recognised thought leaders specifically in this area. We are one of only 5 centres worldwide selected in this way as a reference site for Presbymax.

What is the difference between Presbyond and Presbymax?

The main differences between Presbyond and Presbymax laser blended vision treatments relate to the extent of shape change delivered by the laser, the amount of near-sightedness that is deliberately induced in the non-dominant eye and the specific technology of the lasers themselves.

Minimally invasive: Both Presbyond and Presbymax requires anaesthetic eye drops to be administered and a flap to be created in the cornea before a laser reshapes corrects the cornea. However, Presbymax treatment is very tissue conserving, with less laser ablation required in order to achieve the desired shape change.

Quick procedure: Both Presbyond and Presbymax take only a few minutes to carry out, however, Presbymax is faster by a matter of seconds.

The Schwind Amaris laser and why this is a superior process

With Presbymax, the difference between the two eyes is minimised with a gentle shape change. Furthermore, with Presbymax the 1050 Hz repetition speed together with 7-dimensional eye tracking only capable with the Schwind Amaris 1050RS laser means that an incredible level of precision is achieved which maximises the visual comfort of the patient together with total independence of glasses.

This makes Presbymax superior to Presbyond. Instead of just being able to see things clearly in the distance which is achieved with standard LASIK laser eye surgery, with Presbymax, patients can focus on objects clearly in the distance as well as the intermediate-range and also close print reading, allowing for total independence of glasses for all activities.

Suitability to have Presbymax

Not all patients are suitable to have Presbymax. The following categories are considered for suitability for Presbymax:

  • Those who have presbyopia exclusively and those who have presbyopia in addition to myopia, hypermetropia, or astigmatism
  • Those with presbyopia who have received cataract surgery already, and want to read without corrective lens implants.
  • Those with presbyopia who have previously received laser treatment for distance vision only such as short-sightedness, far-sightedness and or astigmatism

The best treatment will be determined by your in-depth examination and discussion with your individual surgeon.

Presbymax treatment process

1. Preparing for Presbymax

We advise patients to cease wearing contact lenses for several days prior to the procedure. Your surgeon will also ensure that your ocular surface has been optimised prior to surgery, normally with the use of nutritional supplements and warm eyelid compresses.

2. The treatment process

We use a bladeless all-laser treatment. First the Zeimer Z8 femtosecond laser creates a microscopic ultra-thin flap in the surface of the cornea then The SCHWIND AMARIS 1050RS laser models the cornea. The eye is completely numbed with the use of anaesthetic drops and the procedure is totally painless. Each laser is activated for only a matter of seconds and the entire procedure takes less than a few minutes.

3. Recovery

After the treatment, we advise you to go home and rest for a few hours. The next day your vision should be good enough for most activities including watching TV, reading, driving and work. We advise refraining from vigorous exercise for 5 days after the treatment. Light exercise is possible after 3 days. Showering is fine the following day. We advise refraining from applying makeup around the eyes for 3 days. Swimming is possible after 2 weeks.

Reading vision, intermediate vision and distance vision all return rapidly following the treatment such that the next day, most activities will be possible without glasses. However totally comfortable and natural visual results will continue to improve and adjust for several weeks following the treatment for up to about 3 months.
