Cataract surgery is a unique opportunity to significantly improve your natural vision. Because the cloudy cataract is replaced with a new lens implant, this lens power can be individually adjusted for the optics of your eye. This gives the surgeon the opportunity to correct your innate short-sight, long-sight and astigmatism. For many, this means better vision than they would have otherwise naturally had and which might have been limited by the need for glasses.

70 years after the worlds first intraocular lens was implanted by Sir Harold Ridley, a British surgeon in London, this technology has evolved into an incredibly advanced optical device. Current lenses are capable of achieving freedom from glasses for distance and near vision, and incorporate filters that protect the eye from UV and wavelengths of light emitted by devices such as smartphones.

The cataract surgeons at OCL Vision are unique in that they primarily aim to achieve the best possible unaided vision for their patients. This is achieved through:

  • the use of the latest artificial intelligence derived pre-operative lens power prediction (Haag Streit, Lenstar)
  • low threshold for correction or astigmatism through use of toric lens implants, and
  • expertise in trifocal lens technologies.

Importantly, our surgeons are able to refine the primary outcome of cataract surgery with subsequent laser eye surgery, where needed, to achieve exceptional results. This is particularly important in people who have had laser eye surgery in the past and in whom lens power prediction is less accurate. This second step of refinement puts our surgeons in an elite group of cataract surgeons and is critical if you are considering a multifocal lens implant.

Our surgeons work closely with lens manufacturers. Not all lenses are suitable for all people and your surgeon will discuss which lenses are best suited to you. The price of lenses is included in our treatment packages for self-pay patients. We are also fee assured and recognised by all medical insurers including the BUPA and AXA PP cataract pathways, however, premium lenses in the list below, require an excess to be paid if you wish to have more than than the basic monofocal lens – typically included in insured cataract pathways.

The guide below aims to help clarify the benefits and lens choices offered at OCL:

lens options for cataract surgery

* These premium lenses are not typically covered by private medical insurance. The lenses we use are the Rayner Rayone hydrophobic monofocal and the Tecnis monofocal lens which correct natural aberrations within the cornea for superior visual quality

** Rayner Rayone toric monofocal, Zeiss AT-Torbi or Physiol Ankoris toric all correct astigmatism

*** Tecnis Eyhance lens implant

**** Tecnis Synergy or Rayner Rayone trifocal lenses

Premium Monofocal lens implants

Monofocal lens implants are the type of lens implant that are used during NHS cataract surgery. These work very well to correct vision, but as the name suggests, they have a single focus. Thus the lens can be chosen for distance or near vision but not both. A lens chosen for distance gives excellent driving vision, but glasses will be needed for near reading and computer work. Glasses may be needed for reading subtitles on a television.

Premium monofocal lenses are designed to compensate for natural optical aberrations that occur within the eye with age and hence improve subtle visual properties such as contrast sensitivity. We use the Rayone monofocal lens from Rayner.

Enhanced Premium Monofocal lens implants

Enhanced monofocal lenses are premium monofocal lenses which correct distance vision whilst also enhancing intermediate distance vision. This extends the range of focus of the lens which can make the difference between needing glasses for subtitles on TV or not. An enhanced monofocal can also help with casual reading such as a text message, menu or tablet, but people may need glasses for close, prolonged reading of small text.

We use the Johnson & Johnson Eyhance lens implant.

Multifocal lens implants

Unlike the NHS setting where lens choice is limited, patients having private lens surgery can choose between a broad range of latest technology lenses. These include multifocal, monofocal and toric intraocular lenses.

The choice of lens is personal and will depend on your lifestyle, visual needs, recreational pastimes, whether you drive, and also on astigmatism or any existing eye disease. All lenses are premium quality, are CE marked and have undergone rigorous testing to allow implantation. Multifocal lens implants are combined with femtosecond laser cataract surgery for best results.

We use the below multifocal lens implants:

Trifocal lens implants

Unlike the NHS setting where lens choice is limited to just monofocal lenses, patients having private lens surgery can choose between a broad range of latest technology lenses. The current generation multifocal lenses are trifocal and extended depth of focus lenses.

The choice of lens is personal and will depend on your lifestyle, visual needs, recreational pastimes, whether you drive, and also on astigmatism or any existing eye disease. All lenses are premium quality from established manufacturers including Zeiss, Finevision, Johnson & Johnson and Rayner. Multifocal lens implants are combined with femtosecond laser cataract surgery for best results.

We use the Finevision Trifocal, Johnson & Johnson Synergy EDOF Trifocal, Rayner Rayone Trifocal and Alcon Panoptix quadfocal lenses. Following specialist diagnostic tests and a detailed consultation, your surgeon will discuss the lens choices that will give you the best visual outcome.

Toric lens implants

Astigmatism, like shortsighted or Longsighted, is a common optical aberration that decreases vision. Lenses that correct astigmatism are called toric lenses. Toric lenses are available in monofocal and trifocal formats
