Mr Emil Kurniawan is an award-winning consultant ophthalmologist with a distinguished career spanning Australia and the UK. After graduating from the University of Melbourne in 2009, where he was the sole recipient of a prestigious scholarship to study abroad at the University of Oslo, Mr Kurniawan completed his foundation years at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
His ophthalmology training at the renowned Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital provided him with comprehensive experience across all subspecialties, earning him the Cedric Cohen Medal for excellence in examinations by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO). Further specialising in cornea, cataract, and refractive surgery, Mr Kurniawan deepened his expertise during a fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, where he worked with some of the world’s leading specialists.
Since 2021, Mr Kurniawan has been a Consultant in Cornea at the Royal Free Hospital, modernising services to provide patients with the latest treatments and surgeries.
He established a weekly corneal transplantation service, enhanced keratoconus care pathways, and mentored trainee ophthalmologists. As Clinical Governance Lead, he drives improvements in patient safety and clinical effectiveness.
A dedicated researcher, he holds a Master of Medicine from the University of Sydney, with award-winning work on eye infections. His research includes 10 peer-reviewed publications and international presentations. Passionate about volunteering, he has contributed to eye care in Myanmar and Ethiopia. His subspecialist training at Moorfields Eye Hospital strengthened his expertise in cornea, cataract, and refractive surgery, where he later worked as a locum consultant. At the Royal Free Hospital, he modernised the corneal service, introducing weekly corneal transplantation and dedicated keratoconus pathways, improving access to advanced treatments. He also mentors trainees and instructs on the Royal College of Ophthalmologists’ DMEK Course.
A dedicated researcher, he holds a Master of Medicine from the University of Sydney, where his award-winning work on eye infections earned the Clarence and Mabel Clark Prize. He has conducted extensive research with the Centre for Eye Research Australia, publishing 10 peer-reviewed papers, including seven as first author, with his work presented internationally.
